There is the normal Saker/Demi Cannon/Mortar/12 lber Foot/ 3lber Horse/12 lber Howitzer combination found in most European armies. Bear in mind, however, that whilst Austria’s Line Infantry can be beaten either with cold steel or hard lead, Russia’s Line Infantry is much worse at range but equals at hand, whereas Prussia’s is best kept far away.Īrtillery-wise there is not much to say. Given their expensive infantry and reliance on skirmishers (which can be reliably handled by the ever-present Hakkapeliita), a slugging match between two sides with statistically come out in Sweden’s favour, whether in melee or not. This is something crucial to bear in mind when facing the Austrians. Interestingly, the latter has much worse stats than the Swedish, knocking 5 off the accuracy, 1 off the melee attack and morale and 2 off melee defence for good measure. Therefore, they cost 740, 40 less than the British, 20 less than the French and a whopping 80 less than the Austrians. Used correctly and put in a place where their (frankly woeful) morale will not be threatened, Militia can be a threat.Īgain as normal, the Swedish have the backbone of any army, the Line Infantry, with standard stats. For 150 less than Line Infantry, you get a unit that has 5 less accuracy and fairly poor melee stats. Militia, however, are a bargain if used properly. As most people who play ETW know, Pikemen are mostly useless, bar facing an all-cavalry army and should be avoided, especially when bearing in mind the Swedish army’s tendency towards a less stationary battlefield tactic.
They are always a useful addition to any army, providing that extra dimension of attack. As per normal, light infantry are used as your only skirmishers in this period, and indeed only one of two that Sweden has altogether. Really, a good player should be using Hakkapeliita as a major thorn in the enemy’s side, doing everything from ambushes to daring flanking manoeuvres.Īpart from cavalry, the Swedes also make use of the standard European early infantry and artillery units, as seen on the picture above. This is a disadvantage when a situation requires medium cavalry such as a Regiment of Horse, though it is partially made up for by the flexibility of the Hackkapeliita. As a downside, all the other cavalry units above it (Dragoons and Regiment of Horse) have their price boosted, from 660 to 810 and 700 to 900 respectively. Hakkapeliita are an extremely versatile unit, able to hold its own against most cavalry units, though it loses against a Regiment of Horse. As well as the normal Provincial Cavalry, Dragoons and Regiment of Horse units, the unique Hakkapeliita light cavalry unit is a tough, fast and useful in cold conditions thanks to its “resistant to cold fatigue” ability. In the early period Sweden enjoys a marked superiority in cavalry over its rivals. A balanced faction, Sweden is a flexible force on the battlefield, with a particular emphasis on early period battles. In Empire: Total War, Sweden makes its maiden appearance in the Total War series.
